The Big Picture
When you look at all 72 games together, the Hammers’ inaugural schedule provides plenty of challenges.
Hamilton will play familiar North Division opponents such as Toronto, Belleville, Rochester, Syracuse, Laval, Utica and Cleveland throughout the season, while also receiving opportunities to face teams from outside the division.
The Hammers will also make trips to some of the AHL’s most recognizable markets, including Hershey, Grand Rapids, Hartford, Providence, Springfield and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
And then there is Abbotsford.
The two-game December trip to British Columbia will be one of the most unique assignments on the schedule, with the Hammers making their longest journey of the regular season before returning to the Eastern Conference grind.
Hamilton’s First True Rivalry?
If there is one opponent that immediately jumps off the schedule, it is the Toronto Marlies.
Hamilton will face Toronto eight times during the regular season, including the Hammers’ first-ever home game and their final road weekend against the Marlies in April.
The rivalry has all the ingredients.
Hamilton and Toronto are separated by a relatively short distance, both teams will compete in the North Division, and the Marlies are entering the season as the defending Calder Cup champions.
The first home game on October 9 should be electric.
But by the time Hamilton and Toronto meet for the final time in April, the games could mean much more than bragging rights.
The Belleville Battle
The Belleville Senators will also become a familiar opponent.
Hamilton opens its entire franchise history against Belleville on October 2, and the schedule contains eight meetings between the two clubs.
That gives the Hammers an immediate opportunity to establish another regional rivalry.
For fans, these are games that should become annual calendar appointments.
The Road Will Test the Hammers
One of the biggest challenges facing any AHL team is travel.
Hamilton’s schedule includes trips throughout Ontario and Quebec, as well as road games in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Michigan.
Then there is the December trip to Abbotsford.
The Hammers will play consecutive games in British Columbia on December 15 and 16 before beginning the journey back east.
For a team in its first season, managing travel, injuries, call-ups and fatigue will be just as important as what happens on the ice.
The Home Schedule
Hamilton fans have plenty to look forward to at TD Coliseum.
The Hammers will play 36 regular-season home games, including 24 weekend dates: seven Fridays, 12 Saturdays and five Sundays. The club will also host a six-game home stand from January 23 through February 6.
There are also several special dates built into the schedule.
The home opener against Toronto on October 9 will be the obvious highlight.
The November 25 School Day Game against Syracuse will bring thousands of young fans into the building.
The February 15 Family Day afternoon game against Utica should provide another strong opportunity for families.
And the final two home games of the regular season, April 8 and April 10 against Laval, could potentially carry significant playoff implications.
