After another exciting week in the CFL, it’s time to break down where all nine teams sit in the power rankings. The CFL Week 12 Power Rankings are here, and we’re starting to get a much better idea of who the real contenders are. Montreal and Edmonton continue to set the standard, but BC is making some serious noise.
Top Tier: (1) Montreal, (2) Edmonton, (3) BC Set the Standard
The Montreal Alouettes and Edmonton Elks continue to be the standard in the CFL. Both teams have found ways to win consistently, and right now, they deserve to sit at No. 1 and No. 2 in our CFL Week 12 Power Rankings.
Montreal made Ottawa look like a high school team. Edmonton, once they woke up, steamrolled the Blue Bombers with little to no issues.
But don’t sleep on the BC Lions.
BC has now won four straight games and is starting to look like the real deal. The Lions sit at No. 3, and if they keep this up, Montreal and Edmonton could have some company at the top. The way they played against the Riders, this team is starting to look like a real Grey Cup contender!
Middle Tier: (4) Toronto Up, (5) Saskatchewan Down
The Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders are two teams that just can’t seem to find consistency, but right now they’re heading in two very different directions.
Toronto moves up to No. 4 and finally looks like they’re trending in the right direction. They’re coming off their best running game in over two years, in my opinion. Plus, the defence is really starting to come together. The Argos still have some things to clean up, but we’re starting to see more of what this team can be.
Saskatchewan drops to No. 5 and continues to struggle. We’ve seen how good the Riders can be, but lately they just haven’t been able to put it all together. The last two games they’ve played are the two worst games I’ve seen from them over the last two seasons, and it’s not even close.
The Basement Tier: More Questions Than Answers — (6) Hamilton, (7) Calgary, (8) Winnipeg, (9) Ottawa
This is where things start to get ugly.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats sit at No. 6 and continue to struggle without Bo Levi Mitchell. Hamilton can keep games close, but without Bo, this offence has had a hard time keeping up. Tre Ford either seems to move the ball with ease or can’t seem to figure out how to throw a pass.
The Calgary Stampeders remain at No. 7 after a bye week, with more injury questions than answers.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers sit at No. 8. They were outscored 22-3 to close the game against Edmonton, a game they seemed to have under complete control until they just fell apart.
Winnipeg’s biggest problem is simple: they can’t seem to play a full four quarters. We’ve seen stretches where they look like the Bombers we expect, but they haven’t been able to put together a complete game.
And then there’s Ottawa.
The REDBLACKS remain at No. 9, and at this point, they just can’t find a way to win. They’ve made changes, tried different things and continue looking for answers, but nothing seems to be working.
The CFL Week 12 Power Rankings show a pretty clear gap starting to form between the top teams and everyone else. Montreal and Edmonton remain the standard, BC is making a serious push, and the rest of the league is trying to find the consistency needed to keep up.
Week 13
When we look ahead to Week 13, these power rankings could flip around quite a bit. With Toronto taking on the Riders and Hamilton taking on Calgary, we could see some teams move around a lot in the middle of the pack.
Plus, if BC can extend its winning streak to five games, we could see the Lions move into the top two for the first time this season.
